Dan Sommer began playing the drums at the age of 11 and started out studying with his school music teacher and playing snare drum in the grade school band. Shortly after, he began studying with private teachers and spent hours in his basement playing along to the radio and practicing songs with his neighborhood friends and schoolmates who played guitar.
His high school years gave him exposure to a wide variety of musical experiences including drumline, symphonic band and jazz studies. During this time, he continued to study privately and perform in his own band playing high school dances, parties and local community events.
Dan attended West Virginia University and earned a BFA in art and design but never abandoned his true love and passion for drums and music. While at WVU, he studied and performed in the WVU Small Group Jazz Ensemble and observed and learned from many of the music students and faculty there.
Dan has spent the last 20+ years performing and recording in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA., most notably as part of the band The Naked Citizens and subsequently has recorded and performed in support of Pittsburgh singer/songwriter Scott Argiro.
As the newest member of Shot O Soul, Dan is excited to be a part of this dynamic and talented group of musicians who have such a passion for the genre of Blues-based music.
